About Us

Welcome to Anita’s Tortilleria – a cherished legacy in the heart of Historic Downtown Brownsville, nestled within the vibrant Mitte Cultural district. Our story traces back to 1953 when Ester Limon began handcrafting authentic corn tortillas, a tradition that endures to this day. In 1982, her daughter Irema and son-in-law Beto Medrano took the reins, and in 2009, the torch was passed to the current owners, who proudly renamed it Anita’s Gourmet Tortilleria y Comida.

The art of our craft lies in preserving Mrs. Limon’s original recipe, utilizing dry whole grain white corn cooked with Food Grade Calcium Lime—no additives or preservatives, just as it was over half a century ago. We blend time-honored techniques with modern technology, ensuring the highest quality and taste. Licensed by the Texas Department of Health Services, we are committed to upholding the highest standards in food manufacturing.

As active members of the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and recipients of the Brownsville Herald Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Tamales, we take pride in our community involvement. Giving back is at the heart of what we do, sponsoring city, school, and state events, and engaging in fundraisers.

Our menu has evolved over the years, offering 100% pure corn masa, the favorite for tamales in Brownsville, alongside pure maize corn tortillas, taco tortillas, and chips fried in canola oil, ensuring a healthier option for our valued patrons. Indulge in our mouth-watering tamales, thoughtfully stuffed with natural ingredients, or savor the unique Olive Oil Tamales, a Texan specialty found exclusively at Anita’s Gourmet.

In addition to our delectable tamales and tortillas, we offer a range of enticing options including Carnitas, Barbacoa, Menudo, daily lunch specials, and breakfast delights. And if you’re planning an event, let us cater, sharing the flavors of Anita’s with your guests.

Join us at the local farmers market on Saturdays, or visit us at our charming location on Jefferson Street. At Anita’s Tortilleria, we’re not just a tortilla shop; we’re a cherished tradition, a community cornerstone, and a testament to the enduring flavors of authentic Mexican cuisine.

Seven Decades of Fresh Masa

The first tortilla off a warm stack rarely makes it to the table. Somebody always rolls it up and eats it standing at the kitchen counter. It’s still almost too hot to hold, and nobody minds one bit. In Historic Downtown Brownsville, that little ritual has a long local pedigree. It started in 1952, when Ester Limon began handcrafting corn tortillas in what’s now the Mitte Cultural District. Today, her original recipe lives on at Anita’s Tortilleria.

Her daughter Irema and son-in-law Beto Medrano took over in 1982. The current owners picked up the torch in 2009 and renamed the shop Anita’s Gourmet Tortilleria y Comida. The masa, however, hasn’t changed. It still starts with dry whole-grain white corn cooked with food-grade calcium lime. There are no additives or preservatives, just as Mrs. Limon made it. That same pure white corn masa anchors the tamales. Their depth comes from a smoky red chili sauce. The team boils dried peppers to coax out the flavors, then blends the sauce into both the masa and the fillings. Seasoned lard and a house spice mix finish the job. For a lighter take, the kitchen swaps the lard for premium olive oil. Those olive oil tamales have become a local favorite with healthcare professionals and anyone with dietary restrictions.

Every tamale is made fresh daily, and the shop’s drive-thru keeps tortillas and tamales moving quickly out the window. The team also gives back to the community by supporting several local organizations. That steady commitment has brought eight consecutive Reader’s Choice wins for Best Tamales in Brownsville, in addition to earning the Texas Treasure Business Award by the Texas Historical Commission. Now it’s also earned the team their 2026 Best of Texas Award. Plenty of those drive-thru orders won’t survive the ride home intact, and that first warm tortilla is usually the reason.
