Welcome to Anita’s Tortilleria – a cherished legacy in the heart of Historic Downtown Brownsville, nestled within the vibrant Mitte Cultural district. Our story traces back to 1953 when Ester Limon began handcrafting authentic corn tortillas, a tradition that endures to this day. In 1982, her daughter Irema and son-in-law Beto Medrano took the reins, and in 2009, the torch was passed to the current owners, who proudly renamed it Anita’s Gourmet Tortilleria y Comida.
The art of our craft lies in preserving Mrs. Limon’s original recipe, utilizing dry whole grain white corn cooked with Food Grade Calcium Lime—no additives or preservatives, just as it was over half a century ago. We blend time-honored techniques with modern technology, ensuring the highest quality and taste. Licensed by the Texas Department of Health Services, we are committed to upholding the highest standards in food manufacturing.
As active members of the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and recipients of the Brownsville Herald Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Tamales, we take pride in our community involvement. Giving back is at the heart of what we do, sponsoring city, school, and state events, and engaging in fundraisers.
Our menu has evolved over the years, offering 100% pure corn masa, the favorite for tamales in Brownsville, alongside pure maize corn tortillas, taco tortillas, and chips fried in canola oil, ensuring a healthier option for our valued patrons. Indulge in our mouth-watering tamales, thoughtfully stuffed with natural ingredients, or savor the unique Olive Oil Tamales, a Texan specialty found exclusively at Anita’s Gourmet.
In addition to our delectable tamales and tortillas, we offer a range of enticing options including Carnitas, Barbacoa, Menudo, daily lunch specials, and breakfast delights. And if you’re planning an event, let us cater, sharing the flavors of Anita’s with your guests.
Join us at the local farmers market on Saturdays, or visit us at our charming location on Jefferson Street. At Anita’s Tortilleria, we’re not just a tortilla shop; we’re a cherished tradition, a community cornerstone, and a testament to the enduring flavors of authentic Mexican cuisine.
